Abstract:
A Fe-Ti-C master alloy, prepared by carbothermic reduction of ilmenite ore in a transferred are plasma reactor, was tried out for deoxidation and dispersion strengthening of steels. Although it was not effective as a deoxidiser, it could be successfully used for impregnation of the ferrous matrix with dispersoids of TIC as well as for modification of sulphide and silicate inclusions. The TIC particles coarsened and gradually dissolved in austenite on raising the temperature to 1150 degrees C, but reprecipitated as submicroscopic particles during subsequent cooling.
