Effect of different factors such as slag chemistry, temperature and graphite type on wettability of graphite by CaO-SiO2- Al2O3-FeO-MgO slags were investigated by using the sessile drop technique where wettability was determined by direct measurement of the interfacial contact angles. Interaction effects of these parameters were also determined by using a simple statistical procedure. SiO2, dill not affect wettability. MgO had a detrimental effect, whereas, FeO content. temperature and graphite with ash content upto 0.3% had beneficial effects on wettability. The most significant effect was realised from FeO content mostly towards the higher value of 9.16%. Interaction effects were not so significant. The energy released on the interface due to the reduction reaction of FeO by carbon had a direct correlation with decrease in surface tension of FeO containing slags which in turn improved wettability.
