Studies on inter and intra particle grain growth in hematite (alpha-Fe2O3) prepared hy hydrothermal precipitation is reported. TEM, XRD and magnetic studies reveal the presence of disordered sub-particles in apparently looking crystalline grains. The observed changes in morphology, mean crystallite diameter and magnetic properties point to a pair-wide bonding of sub-particles inside the grains of hematite. A grain growth mechanism is proposed which takes into consideration the change in dynamics of sub-particles leading to grain growth at the annealing temperature.
