Abstract:
Currently, most countries are burdened with the high generation of plastic wastes and the proper disposal of plastic wastes is a major challenge. On the other hand, to promote sustainable development goals (SDGs) plastic wastes can be recycled and utilized for various applications. Of such promising applications, where a large amount of plastic wastes can be recycled is in the construction industry. The construction industry utilizes a large amount of materials and most of it comes directly or indirectly from natural resources. Hence, the high consumption of natural resources for various construction applications has resulted in a detrimental impact on the ecosystem. Therefore, the use of these plastic wastes for construction applications would help to supplement the natural sources of materials used in construction while offering an effective way to manage plastic wastes. In this critical review, the evolution of plastics, properties and the possible applications of plastic wastes for construction applications are explored. The environmental concerns with the use of plastics in construction are also discussed. Based on the review, current issues, limitations and opportunities associated with the use of plastic wastes for various construction applications are discussed.
