Attempt has been made by the authors to enhance the aesthetic value of natural occurring gem variety ruby from Nuapada district, Odisha through heat treatment and metal oxide filling and the results are reported. A series of experiments by adding different metal oxide additives at a particular temperature were carried out to study the alteration of color and luster of the treated stones. The change in color and chemistry on the surface of the treated rubies with respect to the untreated one were compared. The gem rubies before and after treatment were characterized by XRD to observe the phase formation before and after pore filing with different metal oxide in to the ruby matrix. The phase confirmation, infrared absorption and the change in optical characteristics of the rubies has been analyzed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy.
