Abstract:
A multiphase carbon coating was deposited on silicon carbide grains in situ by dissociation of the carbide in an inert gas plasma produced by a carbon arc. Characterisation of the composite coating by X-ray diffraction, SEM, EDX analysis, microRaman spectroscopy and microhardness tests has revealed that different phases of carbon such as graphite, diamond-like carbon, lonsdaleite and diamond grow simultaneously in the plasma process. The carbon coating is likely to find various applications in industry.
