A series of SO42-/ZrO2 samples with varying sulphur (SO42-) concentration from 1.2 to 4.2 wt% and Ni promoted SO42-/ZrO2 samples have been prepared by controlled impregnation method and characterised by different techniques. The isomerization of n-butane has been studied with a pulse micro reactor. The SO42-/ZrO2 sample promoted with 1 wt% Ni shows the highest activity and selectivity for isomerisation of n-butane to isobutane at 473 K which is about 1.5 times higher than that of unpromoted SO42-/ZrO2 sample. Although the percentage of n-butane conversion increases with increase in reaction temperature in the range of 423 to 523 K, the selectivity to isobutane is greatly affected beyond 473 K. |
