dc.description.abstract In this study an attempt has been made to strengthen plain carbon steels by TiC reinforcement. A Fe-30% Ti-10% C master alloy was added in varying proportions to low carbon (0.05%-0.1% C) steel melts in a laboratory induction furnace. The melts were cast in 50 mm dia sand moulds. The cast samples were then hot forged down to 15 mm dia rods. Mechanical tests performed on forged and normalised steel samples indicated appreciable increase in tensile strength. Both light microscope and TEM studies revealed the presence of finely dispersed TIC particles in the steel matrix. The strengthening of the composites is believed to be the result of the combined effects of grain refinement, precipitation hardening and dispersion hardening.
