dc.description.abstract In the current work, TiB2 reinforced steel matrix composites were synthesized by a technically feasible and cost-effective hot pressing route. A detailed microstructural analysis of the resultant composite was studied. Using a field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), the microstructure evolution of the composite was studied. FESEM observations indicated the homogeneous distribution of TiB2 particles in the matrix. The results also revealed the formation of elongated Cr-Fe-Ni phases (fcc: a = 3.5537 angstrom space group = Fm (3) over barm) in a sympathetic fashion. The size of this phase ranges from 200 to 400 nm. TEM observations indicated a clear interface between steel matrix and TiB2 particles.
