dc.description.abstract Used carbon cathode blocks (also known as spent pot liners) are discarded by aluminium smelting plants in large quantities and because of their high contamination of fluoride, its disposal to open ground pose considerable health risk. Present paper elucidates a simple oxidation process whereby the contaminants like fluoride are removed and many down stream industries for making various industrial graphite products can use the recovered carbon. The recovered carbons are duly characterized in terms of particle size, graphite content and extent of contaminant removal.
